Leonard's Bakery is a family-owned business in Honolulu that has been meeting Hawaii's sweet cravings since 1952. The roots of the operation date back to the 1880s, when Leonard DoRego's ancestors emigrated from Portugal to Hawaii. That was the beginning of this third-generation enterprise. With a continuing commitment to excellence, Leonard's career path-from the humble sugar cane field beginnings to an iconic baked goods establishment-reveals a family legacy in hard work and gastronomic tradition.
The malasada has become synonymous with the Leonard's legacy, this bakery's signature treat. At his mother's insistence, Leonard introduced the Portuguese doughnuts-soft and airy inside, fried to a golden crisps-that have become a favorite among the locals and visitors alike. In 1953, Leonard made them for Shrove Tuesday, thus giving birth to one of Hawaii's most cherished traditions. It stays true to its position as Hawaii's original malasada purveyor, making each batch with a special dough mixed in with the finest ingredients so that they are as ʻono as the Hawaiʻian people can say.
Leonard's Bakery today is a colorful representation of Hawai'i-Portuguese tradition and invites customers to experience the flavor of Hawai'i's first malasadas, along with other wonderful pastries. Iconic pink boxes and timeless recipes remain a staple as Leonards continues a family tradition of flavors and spirit that celebrates Hawai'i.
