About Cowford Chophouse

Cowford Chophouse, at 101 E. Bay Street in Downtown Jacksonville, puts together the perfect blend of very rich history and modern fine dining. Owned by Jacksonville native Jacques Klempf, the restaurant is located in a painstakingly restored Renaissance Revival building that has stood tall since its construction in 1902 as a testament to the city's resiliency.

The origins of the building can be traced to when it was known as the First National Bank of Florida, then various other financial institutions and professional offices called the building home, including the work space of architect Henry John Klutho. After years of disrepair, Klempf purchased the building in 2014 with the goal of restoring the historic landmark while continuing economic and cultural growth in Downtown Jacksonville. It underwent restorations supported by the Downtown Investment Authority and the Historic Preservation Trust Fund of the City of Jacksonville, restoring original elements that included arched windows, exterior bricks, a metal cornice, and 300-year-old heart-of-pine lumber.

The name "Cowford Chophouse" is a nod to Jacksonville's early history, about the narrow point of the St. Johns River where settlers once drove cattle across. Today, the restaurant offers stunning views of the Southbank skyline from the city's only rooftop lounge. Historic charm is combined with a contemporary dining experience.

Cowford Chophouse boasts a leadership team with combined decades of experience in the hospitality industry and serves up a primo steakhouse experience. The menu, to satiate even the most discerning of palates, is complemented by a sophisticated atmosphere that lends a nod to the historic character of the building.

From a culinary standpoint, Cowford Chophouse is deeply woven into the fabric of Jacksonville's heritage. Artifacts found during the renovation of the building were donated to the Museum of Science and History as part of "The Cowford Collection," preserving a tangible connection to the city's past.

Cowford Chophouse is an indication of Jacksonville's legacy and growth, presenting guests with an experience that embraces history, community, and great food. It remains a landmark destination, representative of the spirit of this city and its bold future.
